AIR CONDITIONER REPAIRS: DO I NEED A NEW SYSTEM?

5/1/2014

The average life expectancy of an HVAC unit is 10-20 years.  Big difference, right?  So how do you really know if you just require air conditioning repairs or an entirely new air conditioning unit?  Here are a few tips:

1. How often have you changed the filter?  We all make mistakes but this could be a costly one.  If you haven’t checked your filter on a regular basis, this means your air conditioner has worked harder than it needs to.  This wear and tear can cause air conditioner repairs to be required more often and eventually the need for a new system is much earlier than it could have been.

2. What are your monthly bills?  Your energy provider should be able to tell you if your bills are higher than similar homes in your area.  They base this information on square footage of homes within a defined radius.  If you are above the average, this may be a clue that air conditioner repair alone will not take care of the problem.  Sometimes swapping out for a new, more efficient unit will save you much more money in the long run.

3. Are you calling the HVAC Contractor too much?  After considering the age of your air conditioner, how well you’ve taken care of your unit and how high your monthly bills are, it’s time to take a look at how often you’re calling your HVAC Contractor.  Air conditioner repairs shouldn’t be required every year.  A simple spring air conditioner tuneup should be all you need.  Oftentimes, local companies will be running an air conditioner tuneup sale in the spring so keep an eye out.  This is a simple way to make sure that you avoid costly repairs.

Just like most things you own, taking good care of your HVAC unit will help you avoid unexpected air conditioner repairs.  It will also lengthen the life of your air conditioner and help you plan for when you will need to replace your system.

Always check your filter on a monthly basis and replace it whenever it is dirty.  Pay attention to your monthly bills and the efficiency reports that your energy provider sends you.  In addition, you should be calling your trusted HVAC contractor for “preventative” maintenance, not air conditioner repairs because it’s too late.
